How Marketing Affects Us All

Marketing is one of the most powerful tools in the business world. Marketing affects all of us for two reasons. First, everything we see on TV or in the store has been marketed.  Second, whether we realize it or not, marketing affects every purchasing decision we make.  Marketers do everything in their power to make sure the customer chooses their product over the competition’s.
Every item that sits on a store shelf, is in your home, or hasn’t even been released yet has been marketed. Every company has a marketing team in order to make sure that its product stands out on the shelf. A marketing team has to work together to preserve the overall company image (Markgraf, 2014).  When a good marketing team works well together, it give the product a much better image than that of the competition.
We purchase certain brands every time we shop because we have an emotional tie or a story to that brand. “An enduring, consistent story can build an on-going relationship and pull people to you like nothing else can. These people become advocates for your brand, and as they share your story with others…” (Schulz, 2014). A great example of this is the Pepsi and Coca-Cola rivalry. A true Coke drinker will never even look at the Pepsi logo, and vice versa.
No matter where we go, everything we see has marketing behind it. From grocery stores to malls and billboards to labels, every item tells a story. The key is to be able to tell that story in a way that will draw the consumer to the product at hand. Sometimes new products enter the market and steal our hearts, and sometimes we stay loyal to a single product for our entire lives.
